Medical Abortion (RU486 Pill)
The "abortion pill" is an affective method to end the pregnancy and has been approved in US for almost a decade. We offer Medical (non-surgical) abortions from conception to 8 weeks of pregnancy. This procedure requires two medications: Mifepristone and Misoprostol.Mifepristone (RU486)
The "abortion pill" has been used for several years in Europe and Asia, and has recently been approved in the U.S. for use in medical abortions. It works by blocking the action of progesterone, a hormone needed to maintain pregnancy.Misoprostol
Misoprostol is a drug that makes the uterus cramp and cause bleeding to expel the pregnancy. It is taken 48 hours after the RU486 pill. With a medical abortion, women often have stronger cramping and heavier bleeding than with a period. Bleeding and spotting usually lasts 9-16 days. A few return visits are needed to ensure the abortion is complete. You should not have a medical abortion if:- You are more than 8 weeks pregnant.
- You have severe intestinal problems.
- You take medicines to thin your blood such as heparin or have a bleeding disorder.
- You have a history of heart disease or stroke.
- If you think, you might have an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy not in the uterus).
- You have an IUD at the present time. It must be taken out prior your treatment.
How is a medical abortion done?
After the medical staff confirmed through lab work, medical history, exam and ultrasound that you are eligible for a medical abortion, you will meet with a trained counselor who will review your medical history, answer all your questions and explain the process. The actual procedure for the medical abortion will proceed as follows:
Day 1 - At the clinic
The first visit entails a medical history followed by private counseling regarding the specifics of the process. An ultrasound examination is then performed to establish the precise stage of pregnancy. You will then be given a pelvic examination by the doctor who will administer the Mifeprex (RU486 pill) orally. It blocks a hormone needed for your pregnancy to continue. You may have some bleeding after the first medication, but you still need your second medication to complete abortion. Before you leave our clinic, you will receive four pills of second medication, Misoprostol, along with pain medication prescription to take home.
Day 3 - At home
You will take four pills of Misoprostol orally 28-48 hours later at home placing them between your gum and cheeks. This medication usually produces cramping in about 2 to 4 hours and vaginal bleeding within 1/2 to 10 hours after cramping begins, you may pass some blood clots. Prescribed pain medicine or over the counter pills such as Advil or Tylenol can help with your cramps. In most cases pregnancy will pass within 24 hours of when bleeding begins.Instructions will be given to you at the clinic.
